Types of Residence Permits

In Armenia, residence status is granted in three main forms:

  1. Temporary Residence Permit – Issued for up to 1 year, with the possibility of renewal each time for an additional year. The application for renewal must be submitted at least 30 days before the expiration of the current permit.
  2. Permanent Residence Permit – Issued for 5 years, with the possibility of renewal each time for the same period.
  3. Special Residence Permit – Issued for 10 years in exceptional cases by a decree of the President of Armenia.

Who Can Apply for a Temporary Residence Permit

A temporary residence permit is granted to any foreign citizen if they can justify the existence of circumstances that require their stay in the Republic of Armenia for one year or more.

Such circumstances may include:

  • Studying
  • Having a work permit
  • Being the spouse, parent, or child of a foreign citizen who holds a temporary residence permit in Armenia
  • Being the spouse or close relative (parent, child, brother, sister, grandparent, grandchild) of a citizen of Armenia or a foreign citizen holding permanent or special residence status in Armenia
  • Engaging in entrepreneurial activities in Armenia
  • Being of Armenian descent
  • Other cases defined by law

A temporary residence permit is issued for up to 1 year, with the possibility of renewal each time for an additional year.

The application for renewal of a temporary residence permit must be submitted at least 30 days before the expiration of the current permit.

Who Can Apply for a Permanent Residence Permit

A permanent residence permit is granted to a foreign citizen if they:

  • Can prove the presence in Armenia of a spouse or close relatives (parent, child, brother, sister, grandparent, grandchild) who are citizens of Armenia or hold special residence status, are provided with housing and means of subsistence in Armenia, and have legally resided in Armenia for at least three years prior to applying for permanent residence status, or
  • Are engaged in entrepreneurial activities in Armenia, or
  • Are of Armenian descent.

A permanent residence permit is issued for a period of 5 years, with the possibility of renewal each time for the same period.

The application for the extension of a permanent residence card must be submitted at least 30 days before the expiration date of the card.

Required documents:

  • Application form
  • Three color photographs (35 x 45 mm)
  • Passport, a copy of the passport, and a notarized Armenian translation of the passport
  • Documents justifying the circumstance(s) for obtaining (or extending) residence status in Armenia
  • Medical certificate
  • Receipt of payment for the state duty
